Belize is a small country and public transport services are generally regular, reliable and safe. Getting around the country and visiting many of the destinations even on a short visit is very possible.

Air travel is offered by two competing airlines Tropic Air and Maya Island Air and this keeps prices competitive – there are landing strips it Corozal, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Belize City (Municipal), Belize International, Belmopan, Maya Flats, Central Farm, Dangriga (for Hopkins) Placencia and Punta Gorda – Some resorts and private islands have their own landing strips and planes used are typically 3, 7 and the most popular is the 14 seater caravan type propeller planes. Tropic Air also offer services between Belize International and Flores in Guatemala (Tikal) with onwards service to Guatemala City, Merida and Cancun in Mexico and San Pedro Sula in Honduras. Both local airlines offer private charter as does Javier’s Flying Service a specialist private charter company. There is also one helicopter in Belize operated for many years by Astrum Helicopters.

Boat service is offered between Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro and there are up to 10 departures a day in each direction. There is one departure a day between Caye Caulker, San Pedro and Chetumal (Mexico) – there is also a less frequent service between Punta Gorda in the South and Puerto Barios in Guatemala though the boats are smaller and the ocean can be a little more assertive during the long journey. On the island of Ambergris Caye there is a frequent service offered between San Pedro and most of the resorts running North of the island up to 13 miles from the town.

There is a very frequent bus service connecting all corners of Belize, this is the main transport of the people. The buses however are very old American buses, many of them former school buses. The buses do not have air conditioning except the express bus operating between Punta Gorda in the South and Belize City. All other services stop frequently but since traffic is light in Belize, they reach their destinations according to the set schedules. Cost is very small and the buses are very safe for tourists to use.

The majority of tourists travelling throughout Belize opt to take Private transfers which are offered by many small transport companies as well as a very large % of the hotels. Typically vehicles used by transport companies are older vans, SUV’s and cars while the hotels mostly use more modern Vans and SUV’s.
